DAS is the leading international brand in the legal protection insurance industry. Défense Automobile et Sportive was established in Le Mans, France, in 1917 by Georges Durand. Its purpose was to provide protection to participants of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in case they caused serious accidents.
The Italian branch was founded in Milan on November 26, 1959, and later relocated its headquarters to Verona. In the 1990s, DAS was controlled by Toro and Das International. In 2006, it was acquired along with Toro by Assicurazioni Generali, and in 2013, it became part of Generali Italia.
